Frequently asked questions about Disaster Recovery Plan

Why do I need a Disaster Recovery Plan?
A Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan provides a structured framework for identifying and testing the steps needed to restore your business operations after a disaster.  A disaster can be anything that disrupts your business—like a power outage, natural disaster, or malware attack.

“We’ve never had a disaster—why should I worry about a DR Plan?”

A Disaster Recovery Plan is something you hope to never need.  But, having a DR Plan means you’re prepared when things go wrong.  In the chaos of an unexpected event, the plan acts as a roadmap, guiding your team calmly and efficiently to get your business back on track as quickly as possible.

What are the key components of a DR Plan?

Every DR Plan begins with a Business Impact Analysis (BIA).  The BIA identifies how various parts of your business are interconnected and highlights which areas would not function properly if your IT systems went down.

Once the BIA is complete, we develop the formal DR plan.  Typically, we focus on three common disaster scenarios.  For each scenario, we work with you to define detailed recovery steps for each system.

Once I have a DR Plan, I’m done… right?”

Not quite.  A DR Plan is never truly finished.  It needs to be tested, updated, and refined over time.  As your systems and business evolve, so should your plan.

Garcea Technologies follows a structured process to keep your DR Plan up to date as changes occur.  We also conduct tabletop testing—a guided walk-through of recovery steps—to ensure everything works as expected.  These sessions help identify any gaps or improvements needed in the plan.

We recommend testing your DR Plan every 6 to 12 months and reviewing/updating it annually, or sooner if there’s a major change in your business or IT environment.

Are DR Plans required?

Beyond providing peace of mind for you and your team, DR Plans are increasingly becoming a requirement for Cybersecurity insurance policies.  Many insurance providers now mandate a documented DR Plan as part of their policy approval process.  Why? Because having a solid recovery plan reduces the cost and impact of disasters and helps businesses bounce back faster.

Garcea Technologies can guide you through creating and maintaining an effective DR Plan that meets these requirements.

What is the process for creating a DR Plan?

The project begins with a kickoff meeting where we define the scope and parameters.  We understand that not all systems are equally critical, so we work with you to determine which systems should be included in the plan.

Once the scope is finalized, we review each selected system in detail. We then meet with key employees responsible for those systems to conduct the Business Impact Analysis (BIA).  After the BIA is complete, we help you create tailored recovery procedures for each system.  When the DR Plan is fully drafted, we review the final version with you and—if needed—conduct recovery testing to ensure everything works as intended.
